Time and experience are the best teachers. Today I know what I would have done differently in the past. But I do not regret my choices or my life. As I write, I have your life in mind now, and this might help you navigate into or away from a potential life-long relationship.
Remember how I used to write down the characteristics my “perfect guy” would have? Oh, the irony of that statement. Words are powerful. Rather than have a list of things I want in a person, I have now realized I would write a list of non-negotiables—attributes to absolutely require in a mate.
So, get out a piece of paper, or make a list on your phone. Don’t forget to write down the traits you think are obvious, as those are the ones you’ll want the most in a life companion. Is it necessary that your future spouse is honest? Is it necessary that they have a six-pack? Is it necessary that they are funny? Is it necessary that they dress nicely? Only you know exactly what is essential and therefore non-negotiable for your life. When someone comes in your life, they must have those qualities or you will struggle in their absence. If you need a little help, Google “character traits” for a long list and pick out the ones you must have in a companion.
